Dust generated from Coal preparation plant is one of operation aspect that need appropriate control. This paper shows how to prevent coal dust generation using water spray and chemical application.

With environmental policy applied in PT Kaltim Prima Coal and proceeding compliant audit of ISO 14001, dust control and management is one of critical task that need to be manage properly. Plant location that only 1 km from nearest community housing, made dust management more critical.

Environmental restrictions do not allow the generation of large quantities of fugitive dust. Government environmental authorities impose penalties and can close down a plant if necessary. Dust can contaminate the atmosphere and surrounding areas. The most hazardous particles are those with a diameter less than 10 microns.

Due to the coal price increase, KPC low–medium range coal production also increase. This kind of coal contain more fine which mean more dust. Existing water spray is not sufficient to suppress dust. Additional spray point and chemical application is introduced. Additional spray location for chemical spray application carefully selected. Trial period to monitor the result is generated of a week operation. Air quality at community area is monitored with and without chemical spray application. Environmental report of air quality showed that combination of water and chemical spray can be use to control dust under threshold limit. Dust concentration down 25% in average.
