Integrated directly within the rail itself, RailBoss requires minimal space and installs quickly, at – according to the manufacturer Rice Lake – roughly one-third the cost of conventional railroad scale designs.

Scrap yards, agricultural operations and more can now afford to install their own in-house railroad scale for stationary weight verification of rail cars and other non-Legal-for-Trade needs. RailBoss utilizes strain gauges to accurately determine individual weights for each wheel and an accurate total weight for the rail car. Rail cars can be positioned on the scale by track mobile, tug motors, locomotives, or other convenient means, positioning and weighing takes only a couple of minutes. Once the rail car is in position, the indicator displays the weight of the rail car. The rail scale pairs with Rice Lake's 920i programmable indicator/controller and exclusive software to offer scale capacities up to 320 000 pounds (approx. 160 tonnes).
