Rockwell automation company, has been catering to automation needs of the Indian Oil & Gas (O&G) sector, for more than 60 years. After several major accidents in the O&G industry in the past few years, today the sector is under huge regulatory pressure for maintaining safety and sustainability of operations with stringent concern for preventing environmental damages. Rockwell is all set to address this immediate need through its latest safety PLC – the AADvance...

PROCESS India: What kind of priority is attached to ‘safety’ when it comes to control system automation in O&G sector?

ABANIBHUSAN BERA: To be in the ‘process’ space, ‘safety’ is one of the major areas that an automation vendor should have in its products and solutions to offer. As Oil & Gas (O&G) is predominantly a process industry, an automation vendor has to cater to both the control and safety systems. Rockwell, being already evolved a lot and having its own DCS – called PlantPAx (Process Automation Excellence) and Safety Systems (through acquisition), is able to provide Integrated Control & Safety Systems (ICSS) Solutions to the O&G Industry.

Today, the driver of O&G industry is ‘safety’ because of lots of regulatory pressures. Several fatal accidents have happened because of lack of safety. After the IOCL (Jaipur) fire accident, the M. B. Lal Committee was formed. As per its recommendations, a mandate has come (that) all the O&G storage areas should have a safety system in place – that includes emergency shutdown, fire and gas system etc., so that this type of accidents do not recur.

Safe, secure and sustainable – The ideal production process ticks all these boxes. With rising energy prices and an increasing awareness of environmental and personal safety, this year's Process Management Academy in Antwerp focused on 'Excellence in Safety and Sustainability'. PROCESS India: How has Rockwell geared up over a time to serve the Indian O&G industry?

Additional Information
What Drives a Safety System Upgrade?

ABANIBHUSAN BERA: Rockwell Automation provides control automation including electrical control. In 1985, Rockwell had acquired Allen-Bradley, the 100-year-old big and reputed PLC company, and retained it as a brand.

To tackle the ever-changing needs of the process control industries, one of the prudent initiatives that Rockwell took in July 2007 was – it took over ICS Triplex, a British company and pioneer in the field of safety. ICS Triplex is one of the very few safety-specialist companies in the world.
