The gas explosion in the administrative district Kemerowo killed at least 30 people.

Kemerowo, Russia – After a heavy methane explosion in a coal mine in the administrative district Kemerowo, Russia, the number of fatalities has increased to at least 30. Only 48 hours remain to rescue the perhaps 60 mine workers trapped in the ‘Raspadskaja’ underground mine.

The first of the two explosion happened in the late hours of Saturday, May 9, 2010. A second explosion happened on early Sunday morning, killing at least 17 rescuers who were trying to reach the perhaps 60 trapped mine workers. Whether the miners are still alive is as yet unknown. Smoke and gas have entered the mine shaft and made further rescue attempts impossible. The second explosion destroyed the main ventilation shaft. On the surface a number of people has been injured as well, and there is the possibility of further explosion. Currently, rescue workers are repairing the ventilation as well as the power supply in the underground coal mine, which started operation 37 years ago. According to Sergej Schoigu, Minister of Civil Protection, there is also the danger of water entering the 370 kilometre underground tunnel system.
