Ma’aden-Alcoa-JV awards Contracts for Ras Az’Zawr Aluminum Complex to Fluor

Fluor has won a number of contracts for the Ras Az’Zawr Aluminum Complex in Saudi Arabia.

Irving (TX), USA & Riyadh, Saudi Arabia – On May 24, 2010, Fluor announced that it has won a series of contracts from the Ma‘aden-Alcoa Joint Venture. The work includes program management consultancy and engineering, procurement and construction management work at the USD 10.8 billion integrated Ras Az‘Zawr Aluminum Complex.

The series of contracts from the joint venture comprising Saudi Arabian Mining Company, also known as Ma‘aden, and Alcoa, covers the provision of Program Management Consultancy (PMC) and Engineering, Procurement and Construction Management (EPCM) services for a number of projects related to the development of the integrated Ras Az’Zawr aluminum complex. The estimated USD 10.8 billion project will include a bauxite mine, alumina refinery, aluminum smelter and rolling mill. In the second quarter of 2010, Fluor expects to book approximately USD 3 billion covering four separate scopes of work for the Ras Az’Zawr complex.

Fluor’s scopes of work will include provision of overall PMC services for the development of the entire Ras Az‘Zawr aluminum complex, and EPCM services, in a 50:50 joint venture with Australia’s WorleyParsons, for the mine and alumina refinery with an expected delivery date of fourth quarter of 2013. Fluor will also provide stand-alone EPCM services for the site’s rolling mill also with an expected delivery date of fourth quarter of 2013; and stand-alone EPCM services for Ras Az’Zawr site’s integrated infrastructure. Fluor will execute the engineering for the Ras Az‘Zawr projects from its offices in Al Khobar, Saudi Arabia; New Delhi, India; and Greenville, South Carolina; with support from other global Fluor locations. Once completed, the super-project will include a bauxite mine with an annual capacity of 4 million tonnes at Al Ba’itha, a 1.8 million tonnes per year refinery, a 740000 tonnes per year smelter, and a rolling mill with a capacity of up to 460000 tonnes per year.
