Ausenco has received a Letter of Intent (LOI) to provide Evaluate phase services for Anglo American’s USD 5.8 billion Minas Rio iron ore expansion project studies in Brazil. The Minas-Rio iron ore project in Brazil is expected to produce 26.5 million tonnes per year of iron ore in its first phase and made good progress during 2011.

South Brisbane (QLD), Australia – On the basis of the LOI, Ausenco will begin work on the pre-feasibility study, which is due for completion in early 2013 and will cover all elements of the future expansion project including the mineral processing plant, tailings storage facility, concentrate pipeline, and the onshore and port infrastructure.

Minas-Rio secured a number of major licences and permits during the year; the offshore and onshore works at the port are on schedule; more than 90 per cent of land access has been secured along the 525 kilometres pipeline route and more than 200 kilomeres of pipeline has been installed; and the civil works at the beneficiation plant are well under way.
