Size does matter – but while 'big is beautiful' sometimes small is better - especially when cramped conditions or safety constrictions put a distinctive price tag on installation space. Pepperl+Fuchs presents a new I/O Module that helps to reduce the cabinet space by up to 32 percent, the company states, making it the currently smallest of its kind in the world.

Room can be quite costly – not only when talking about e.g. rental prices in downtown Manhattan, also on cramped installations or in hazardous areas every needed meter has a distinctive price. Now Pepperl+Fuchs issues a new ultra compact I/O module for hazardous areas that provides everything you would except from a state of the art four channel I/O in only half the size. The new High Density Module is certified for use in Zone–2 areas, providing a backplane based fully hot swap capable design. Therefore, a fully redundant setup can be achieved by using two bus couplers and power supply units per backplane.

Electronic Design and Power–Management Key to Success

The company used a new electronic design with an improved power management to significantly reduce the installation space, company speakers said. With the new I/O–module a total LB system can be reduced by 32 percent in size (as the bus couplers and power supply unit remain the same). This is comes valueable for hazardous area operations, where installation spaces are crampy and costly, the company believes.

Versatile and Easy: Compact State of the Art I/O Module

The High–Density I/O features one status LED per channel, allowing for a quick diagnosis at a glance. The unit can be set to process both binary and analog inputs with each channel featuring its own HART modem.
