The new SEW-Eurodrive asynchronous motors meet Atex (Europe), IECEx (International) and HazLoc- NA (North America) requirements for deployment of equipment in explosion hazard areas.

This is a seemingly endless number of explosion protection regulations which must be complied with worldwide. The new SEW-Eurodrive asynchronous motors meet Atex (Europe), IECEx (International) and HazLoc- NA (North America) requirements for deployment of equipment in explosion hazard areas. Certified compliance with these standards makes them ideal for worldwide use.

Gregor Dietz, Gear Motor Product Manager at SEW-Eurodrive, explained the major advantage of the new series: “We now offer a motor which conforms to a broad range of worldwide explosion protection regulations”. The design also reflects environmental guidelines in the various countries. In Europe, explosion-protected motors have been excluded from efforts to improve energy-efficiency to a very large extent. Explosion protection and energy efficiency are now no longer mutually exclusive. The motors and gear motors are available in IECEx Equipment Protection Level (EPL) Gb and Gc (gas atmosphere) versions and as an Atex-compliant Category 2G, 2GD and 3GD, 3D drive for Zones 1 / 21 and 2 / 22.

They can also be supplied as Category 3GD and 3D brake motors. Combined gas/dust approvals for the SEWgear motors simplifies the selection of drive components and reduces the number of variations. The motors can be used in combined gas/dust hazard areas. The Category 2 and 3 4-pole motors are suitable for operation with a frequency converter. Various versions of the explosion-protected motors with power ratings between 0.12 kW and 75 kW are available.

They also feature IP54 protection, a high-temperature gear lubricant, high-grade shaft seals on the gearbox, aluminum or gray cast terminal box and high-temperature terminal box seals. An additional terminal (HF potential equalization) improves grounding.
