Glatt's ProCell LabSystem now comes in explosion pressure proof design: At ACHEMA 2012, the company presented its flexible fluid bed laboratory unit for granulation processes in a new setup that allows the handling of all St-1 and St-2 dusts, which means almost all common solid materials.

Now the time needed for safety review prior to trials can be considerably reduced – but also the use of future products with unknown properties for test is greatly simplified. With the concept of “avoiding ignition sources”, any explosions are highly unlikely, Glatt states. If, nevertheless, an explosion should occur, it is safely contained inside the device.

Solvents can also be processed, using additional equipment. In case the solvents and explosive dust form hybrid mixtures, an explosion would be kept inside the pressure shock resistant ProCell LabSystem.

Closed Loop Processes for Solvents Optional

For the processing of solvents Glatt offers a closed loop of the process gas as an option. The process gas, usually nitrogen, is cleaned after the processing chamber and returned to the process. A condenser separates the solvent which may be re-used. Especially when using the unit as small production equipment this option is used.

Versatile Fluid–Bed Granulation for Spray Granulation or Agglomeration

For the cleaning an automated wash in place (WIP) system can be employed. The entire process room is cleaned by means of cleaning nozzles. This ensures a comfortable cleaning procedure. In addition it provides the possibility to test the capability of automated cleaning systems for new products already in the lab scale.

Spray granulation and agglomeration process can be tested with the ProCell LabSystem, generating granules and pellets from powder and/or liquid raw materials. Coating of existing particles is also possible. Different process inserts offer fluid bed process, spouted bed process or rotor process. Batch or continuous processing is possible. Unique is the wide range of capacities: throughput of 0.2 - 15 kg/h, spray rate of 0.2 - 18 l/h and working volume of 0.4 - 38l.
