Specifically designed suspension magnets for tramp metal removal from wide and fast travelling belts ensure efficient operation at Newcastle coal ports.

Steinert Germany’s daughter company in Australia has repeatedly supplied Boomerang magnets for ship loading facilities of coal ports in Newcastle, Australia, to remove tramp iron. The suspension magnets were specifically designed for the wide and fast travelling belts commonly used in large coal handling operations. Some of the conveyors, for example, have a belt width of 2500 mm and move some 8500 tonnes of coal per hour at a speed of 5.25 m/s. To remove tramp iron from the coal on such a conveyor reliably, magnets with a weight of 43000 kilograms had to be installed, suspended from a movable trolley. The power consumption of such a magnet is about 64 kW. The shaped of the systems follows the natural trajectory of the material, which allows long resident time in a multi pole magnetic field and maximum attracting forces.
