Erlangen, Germany – The Peruvian corporation Compañia Minera Antamina has awarded the Siemens Industry Solutions Division an order to supply gearless drive systems for an semi autogenous grinding ore mill and a ball mill. The project is worth around EUR 20 million and is scheduled for completion in late 2010.

Compañia Minera Antamina operates an open-cast mine for copper and zinc ore in the Peruvian Andes. At an altitude of 4300 metres above sea level, the mine is located in the Ancash Region about 270 kilometres to the north-east of Lima, and extracts approximately 360000 tonnes of ore per day.

The Siemens scope of supply and services includes engineering, manufacture and delivery of the electrical equipment for the Semi Autogenous Grinding (SAg) mill and the ball mill. In order to avoid time-consuming maintenance work and output losses due to toothed-ring gears and pinions, gearless Simine Mill GD drive systems with ratings of 20.1 MW for the SAG Mill and 11.1 MW for the ball mill are to be used. Developed by Siemens, this solution has the lowest energy consumption of all mill drives on the market and, at the same time, features outstanding availability and reliability. The associated transformers, protection equipment and operator-control devices also form part of the project.
