ABB Automation boosts Productivity at Swedish Mine

Boliden and ABB completed the USD 580 million project at Garpenberg on time and on budget in mid-2014.
Mining Automation
ABB, the power and automation group, has deployed a tailored technological solution to transform Boliden AB’s Garpenberg mine in central Sweden into one of the most-efficient and productive mines in the world. Autonomous processes stretching a kilometer underground are unified in a single system driving efficiency and productivity to the next level. Boliden transformed the mine over four years in close cooperation with ABB, building on the principles of the Internet of Things, Services and People.

Transmitter/Intelligent Junction Box for Remote Scale System Monitoring

According to Transcell Technology, the LCT-2 transmitter/intelligent junction box costs about 50% less than the combination of separate devices.
Weight Measurement
Transcell has announced a digital weight transmitter, combined with an intelligent junction box, for high-speed, individual monitoring of up to four individual load cells. The unit is able to measure and transmit filtered weight data to a programmable logic controller (PLC) or other compatible host device, via Modbus protocol or Ether- Net/IPprotocol.

3D Solids Scanners for accurate continuous Level and Volume Measurement

Emerson’s Rosemount 3D Solids Scanners provide level, volume and mass measurement of bulk solids and powders.
Level Measurement
Emerson Process Management developed the Rosemount 5708 Series of 3D Solids Scanners for the continuous measurement of level, volume and mass of bulk solids and powders in large vessels, bins and silos. The new series uses acoustic measurement and 3D mapping technologies to provide accurate and reliable results even when measuring uneven or sloping surfaces under dusty conditions.

Free Coupling Guide for Mining Engineers

The new guide, titled 'Coupling Solutions: Rubber-in-compression', addresses issues such as; backlash, extreme vibration, safety, reliability, how to cut maintenance and how to reduce lifetime operating costs in mines and quarries.
Drive Systems & Components
Renold Hi-Tec Couplings of Halifax, UK, has published a free pdf guide on the use of rubber-in-compression couplings on a wide range of mining and quarrying applications. The guide is the first in a newly launched series of Info.Base publications designed to assist engineers with many of the day-to-day issues associated with power transmission systems on industrial plant, equipment and machinery.

Mechanisms of Powder Caking

The new White Paper demonstrates how dynamic powder testing can be used to quantify caking behaviour under different environmental conditions.
Particle Characterisation
Freeman Technology has published a new white paper that describes extensive experimental studies examining the multiple mechanisms that lead to powder caking. Caking is a routinely encountered problem within powder handling applications which compromises productivity and increases waste.
