Digital Magnetic Imaging of Steel Cord Conveyor Belts in Practice

Steelcord-reinforced conveyor belting is widely used for the transportation of a wide range of products in a wide range of mining industries including hard rock, coal, aggregate, iron ore, gold, copper, diamond etc. The ability to perform continuous non-destructive condition monitoring of these belts would be beneficial to improve the reliability and availability of these belt transport systems.

Although X-ray technology has been successfully employed for the online imaging of cord and splice defects in steel cord-reinforced belting, the high cost of such systems combined with safety issues due to the radiation hazard, discourages their use for permanent installations. Another alternative technique measures the magnetic fringing fields that occur above breaks in previously magnetised cords. Initial implementations of this technology relied on a relatively few sensors (or a lot of sensors connected in series) and because these sensors were mostly coils, their output was proportional to the rate of change of the magnetic field. This signal, typically viewed on a chart recorder, was often difficult to interpret. In March 2006, Advanced Imaging Technologies began the development of a new second generation magnetic imaging technology, which uses an array of magnetic field sensors to measure the localized fringing fields above the belt to give a high-resolution magnetic image of belt damages and splices. Following an extensive prototype program, in collaboration with Veyance Inc, this technology is being successfully implemented in mines and power stations around the world. A subsequent development, using similar magnetic imaging technology, allows for the detection of longitudinal rips in conveyor belts. This Whitepaper will describe the results obtained from field installations used for the online monitoring of cord damages, splice deterioration and the detection of rips.
